President's Message - Giselle Carson Plato said that the direction in which education starts a man or a woman will determine his or her future life. One of our Chamber's goals is to provide educational opportunities for our members and community. To reach this goal, we have launched our second series of "Talleres de Negocio" in Spanish.
Participants described their experience at this seminar
as "empowering, instructive and friendly". I am extremely grateful to those individuals and organizations that made this seminar a success. Particularly, Carmen Merced and Nancy Alvarez-Hernandez who did an outstanding job at teaching; Jose Rodriguez, Maylene Moneypenny, Rebeca Vezga and Nelson Estepa who worked diligently in the planning and execution of the seminar; the Hispanic Newspapers and Radio that helped with promotion; Seven Wonder's bakery that donated delicious pastels; and the participants who were engaged and interactive. Gracias a todos!! Additional information about these series is at our website and newsletter. The Chamber will also be providing two seminars on How
to become a U.S. Citizen to assist with the understanding and planning for naturalization. These seminars will only benefit those that are legal permanent residents. Additional information about these seminars is provided in this newsletter. Get all the education you can and don't just stand there, take action and make it happen!

Membership Spotlight - Roberto J. Guardia Hello Everyone!!
My name is Roberto J. Guardia, but I'm known as "Bobby". I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and moved to my father's homeland of Panama, when I was 14 years old. I started my engineering degree at the University of Panama, only to finish at the University of Illinois with a bachelor's and masters in Geotechnical Engineering.
Life in the U.S. began as a temporary transfer but the political turmoil and uncertainty my family encountered due to the Dictatorial regime of the time forced us to consider our move to the U.S. as permanent. I have been working at Shannon and Wilson for over 16 years and recently transferred from Seattle to our new offices in Jacksonville.
Our recent move is a testament of the adaptability of our family. It hasn't always been easy moving around from Panama, to Dallas, to Seattle and now to Jacksonville. It requires adapting to new friends, places, and even the weather. I love this country, for the possibilities it has given me and my family which include my wife Marisa, and our four children Angelica 23, Juan 21, Anna 19, and William 17. One of my greatest joys has been to witness my daughter graduate from the University of Washington and how my other children are following fast in her footsteps.
I am a dedicated worker and make time for family and to pursue the simple pleasures of life. I am enjoying the challenges of learning golf, seek nature's beauty and enjoy camping. And although I'm not an expert yet, my wife Marisa and I enjoy salsa dancing and taking lessons. I feel that I am a strong product of my Panamanian and American upbringing and look forward to making new friends in Jacksonville and the things life has yet to bring.
We are very proud to have another Puerto Rican and Panamanian among the members of the FCHCC. Welcome Bobby and your family! |

Maira Martelo Hola Noticias Jacksonville.
ón-Ote
ro, quien es de origen puertorriqueño.
