President's Message - Giselle Carson
g_carsonOutstanding, inspiring, sensational.....are some of the words attendees have used to describe the Achieving the Dream scholarship luncheon hosted for the first time by a partnership between the FCHCC and the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Board, and the most remarkable part of it all is that the event will have a longstanding impact in the lives of 16 young deserving Hispanic students and their families.

This terrific event would not have been possible without the tremendous support of our sponsors, board and committee members, and volunteers and to all of you I say THANK YOU and please stay engaged to help us make this program bigger and better in 2010!

Our next professional networking event will be hosted by Medtronic and I encourage you to attend because not only will it provide great networking opportunities but the program is also sprinkled with tips to become more effective and productive in these turbulent times.
Cheers to a brighter future and Happy Thanksgiving!

Giselle

Board Member's Message -
Francisco Sefair
Diane Brunet - headshot The end of the year is just one step away and the events that I have lived in 2009 have truly enriched my life.

My name is Francisco Sefair and my journey with the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce started three years ago when I joined the organization with my newly-founded company.

At that time, I saw an organization that was supported by a small group of individuals that wanted to make it better and bigger. That was encouraging and I decided to participate in every single event and support the organization by reporting their activities in La Plaza the newspaper.

After my first year I was invited to play a more active role in the chamber and I was offered to become a Board member. I can assure any of the readers that I have seen the organization growth year after year and I think that has been possible thanks to the leadership of the past and present president as the hard work of all the board members and the continuous support of its affiliates.

Living in Jacksonville has been a great experience. I moved to the city seven years ago and I have been blessed with the opportunities that I have received. This town not only gave me a nice job, a Masters degree, my own company, but the chance to meet great people. I've lived some of my best years through the constant challenges that I faced, but came out far on top on them because of the support I've received from the chamber.

I'm married to my sweetheart; Maria Alejandra Rozo and we have had the privilege to share most of the experiences that I have mention above.

I want to invite anyone that wants to make changes in their life and wants to give to their community, to become members of the Chamber and contribute to make us even better and bigger. If you'd like to learn more about joining us, visit our website at www.fchcc.com.

Achieving the Dream Scholarship Luncheon Presents 16 Scholarships to Students from the First Coast
The Mayor's Hispanic American Advisory Board and the FCHCC awarded sixteen scholarships to local Hispanic graduate and undergraduate students on Friday, October 23, to support their pursuit of higher education.

The support from the community was incredible this year with over 400 people in attendance to cheer on the recipients as they received recognition for their academic accomplishments. The students were given gift baskets courtesy of presenting sponsor Winn-Dixie, and three scholarship recipients went home with new laptops from Best Buy, awarded by raffle.

News personality and consumer affairs reporter Ken Amaro served as the Master of Ceremonies. Mayor John Peyton, a strong proponent of education and a driving force behind literacy programs in Jacksonville, provided the opening remarks. Gustavo Pérez Firmat, renowned Cuban-American author and professor at Columbia University, set an inspirational tone for the scholarship recipients, encouraging them to actively pursue and achieve their dreams. Thank you for helping these students "Achieve the Dream."
