President's Message - Betzy Santiago
Betzy Santiago, 2010 FCHCC President"We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..."

4th of July is quickly approaching. As the most patriotic holiday in the US, we remember when we, as Americans, declared our independence from Britain in 1776. It is because of the devoted military and service personnel that we maintain such a high standard of living. Thank you for all of you who serve our country and allow us the freedom to pursue our unalienable rights.  

The FCHCC also wants to thank the Fraternal Order of Police for hosting our June mixer where we learned about some special programs being offered by WorkSource and Job Corps. We also want to thank State Farm for hosting our Coffee and Learn event and SCORE Jacksonville for educating us on Marketing Strategies to Expand your Business.  

In July, our focus is on Federal Health Reform Laws and how they are changing the way private insurance is regulated and handled. Come be educated and informed by Mayo Clinic's CEO, Dr. William Rupp. Access to insurance, pre-existing conditions, insurance practice restrictions, small business tax credits, and more is what will be changing in the coming year. Stay ahead of the curve.  

Each month we try to bring you workshops, mixers, and other opportunities to promote the growth of your Hispanic business. Be a part of what is happening and expand with us. 


Board Member's Message - Kim McDougal,
True Focus Group
Kim McDougal, FCHCC Interactive Web/Design ManagerMy name is Kim McDougal and I've been a staff member with the chamber since 2009. I'm originally from Chicago, Illinois and slowly made my way down south finally settling in Jacksonville in 1993 after the death of my first husband. In 1999, I started my own home-based business primarily helping my clients design and produce marketing materials and offering high-end administrative support. In 2001, I re-married to my wonderful husband, Ken, and in 2006 and we merged our professions together to form True Focus Group. The company now focuses on web content management services, graphics, photography, and internet marketing.

I come from a very multicultural background of Native American, Black, and Caucasian and I've always been proud of my heritage. In my mind, I have the best of all three worlds! My mom raised me that way and I'm so thankful to her for that. I was first introduced to the FCHCC through my contract work with Brunet-Garcia Multicultural Advertising & PR in 2008. My first assignment was to work on the monthly newsletters and immediately I loved working with the board members. My work with the chamber quickly expanded, and I was honored to become the Executive Assistant in 2009. This year, my role has changed dramatically with the addition of all our technological advancements. I am now the Interactive Design/Web Manager overseeing our web content, social media, and electronic marketing.

Through the chamber, I've met and have worked with many wonderful people and I look forward to what this year will bring. If you have not been to one of the networking events, I encourage you to attend. You will learn a lot and get to network with many great people! Membership Spotlight - Rebecca Black, David R. Fletcher P.A.
Rebecca BlackRebecca Black is an immigration attorney handling business, family, investment, asylum, and deportation cases as well as appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. She practices with David R. Fletcher, P.A. - a firm specializing in immigration cases in Jacksonville Florida for well over 30 years.

Rebecca holds a MBA from Marymount University and a BA in History from the University of Virginia. Her decision to change careers came after hearing the stories of many of her immigrant employees and as she recalled her own immigration issues while working in France and in Spain. She earned her degree from Florida Coastal School of Law in 2006 after 15 years of opening and managing restaurants internationally and 5 years in the light industrial temporary help industry. Her ability to speak Spanish and French coupled with her experience and business education especially qualifies her in the field of business immigration work.

Rebecca became a part of the FCHCC after graduating from law school and has enjoyed the many benefits of being a member. She has met people from diverse backgrounds and businesses through the monthly networking meetings and adds that the multicultural meetings are fabulous and informative. As a part of the membership committee, Rebecca has increased her contacts and enjoys being able to make her contribution to a positive and fun organization.

Rebecca is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Florida Bar Association, the Jacksonville Bar Association, the Jacksonville Women Lawyer's Association, and the Hispanic Bar Association. She also serves on Florida Coastal's Alumni Board and the University of North Florida Dean's Council. We are proud to have her serving with us.

Also, congratulations to Ed Perez, FCHCC President-Elect, for his
recent nomination to serve on the Research Advisory Board at MAYO Clinic! The Research Advisory Board at MAYO Clinic:
  • Reviews the research protocol and provides important feedback based on diverse perspectives to the investigators about the proposed study design. 
  • Assists in the recruitment of diverse populations to research protocol. The goal is to increase awareness of the various aspects of research and its implications in underserved communities and to build both the academic and community capacity to conduct culturally competent research partnership and share knowledge and transfer information to improve health outcomes.
  • Finally, to create opportunities for further collaboration and partnership between research investigators and the communities individuals most impacted by racial and ethnic disparities in health.

This year, Florida celebrates the one-year anniversary of the primary safety belt law, which allows law enforcement to pull you over for not wearing your safety belt even without committing another traffic offense.
